Psychonauts 2 – Review

RATING – 9/10

Psychonauts 2 follows the events of the first game directly, where Raz is now officially an intern with the Psychonauts organization. Since the first game came out in 2005, we’d highly suggest playing that first. But if you can’t, there’s a nice little recap that will get both new and old players up to speed.

During the course of the  game, Raz will find himself infiltrating other characters’ minds, where we’ll experience both impressive and disruptive scenarios. These minds are levels filled with a huge array of diverse puzzles, both making use of abilities from the original game and then some new ones. Then there are all of the other mini-games, which make Psychonauts 2 so diverse.

There will be numerous enemies, and we will learn to use a variety of powers in various situations. There are extra psychic powers in addition to the standard melee combat found in this genre, such as Crash Bandicoot punches or twirls. This is often used to unlock access to other areas, in addition to being useful in combat.

The game starts off just a few days after the events of the last game and rolls into motion immediately. The stage is set for grander events, with the head of the Psychonauts missing in action. Raz and team set off in search, with a host of new abilities at hand. Raz is now an official intern with the team and has to gain the respect of those he looks up to. The story is as witty and charming as ever, with memorable characters, and fantastic visual design.

Razputin “Raz” Aquato, trained acrobat and powerful young psychic, has realized his lifelong dream of joining the international psychic espionage organization known as the Psychonauts! But these psychic super spies are in trouble. Their leader hasn’t been the same since he was rescued from a kidnapping, and what’s worse, there’s a mole hiding in headquarters.

It’s amusing, quirky, has a lot of personality and the gameplay holds up consistently well throughout the game, making Psychonauts 2 a solid GOTY contender for 2021.

The Good: Brilliant writing and VA. Impressive and varied level design. Immensely fun gameplay.

Cons: Camera and navigation can be a bit wonky depending on the scene.

Combining quirky missions and mysterious conspiracies, Psychonauts 2 is a platform-adventure game with cinematic style and tons of customizable psychic powers. Psychonauts 2 serves up danger, excitement and laughs in equal measure as players guide Raz on a journey through the minds of friends and foes on a quest to defeat a murderous psychic villain.

  1. Experience an imaginative, cinematic story that mixes humor and intrigue, brought to you by legendary game designer Tim Schafer (Grim Fandango, Brütal Legend, Broken Age).

  2. Explore unique environments using Raz’s ability to dive into people’s brains to battle their inner demons, unlock hidden memories, and resolve their emotional baggage.

  3. Leap acrobatically through the air, traversing tightropes and trapezes in a varied, challenging, and joyful platforming experience.

  4. Wield a powerful array of psychic powers to blast, burn and levitate things, or even slow down time itself to solve environmental puzzles and battle strange enemies.
